Hello Clam Lake!
TOO HOT! This past week saw us climbing near 90 degrees with sun and humidity. Summer is definitely here!! Of course, with this type of weather, the threat of thunderstorms is always looming and we were given a few of those for good measure. Looking ahead it’s nice to see the forecast of cooler weather on the way. We’ll take it!
BOOK CLUB REMINDER – The Clam Lake Book Club will be meeting on Monday August 12th at the Elkhorn Lodge running from 4:30 to 5:30. The book being discussed will be “Remarkably Bright Creatures” by Shelby Van Pelt. This is a “Read With Jenna” (Jenna Bush Hager of the Today Show) selection and is a wonderful book on a woman’s unique relationship with a Great Pacific Octopus and the solving of a mystery in her life. As always, we hope you will join us for some “lively discussion, camaraderie, tasty food and inspiring libation.”
COMMUNITY CLUB MEETING UPDATE – The next meeting of the Clam Lake Community Club will be held a week later than usual on Thursday August 15th beginning at 5:00 pm. After the short meeting there will be a Pot Luck followed by some Clam Lake Style Bingo led by Master Bingo Caller Ace Griffaw. Time to come out and enjoy time with neighbors and friends and learn what’s going on in the village at the same time. We look forward to seeing you! (As a side note – the Clam Lake Community Club has been Clam Lake’s acting civic organization since it’s incorporation in 1937. It’s purpose as stated in its Articles of Incorporation is for conservation and to promote public and social welfare.)
ST. GEORGE CHAPEL – Every Saturday, during the summer season (Memorial Day through Labor Day) at 6:00 pm Mass is celebrated at St. George our historic “chapel in the pines”. St. George, in keeping with the spirit of Clam Lake, is a simple log cabin structure built in 1948. When attending, it’s a reminder of a time gone by in its simplicity. Come pray with us!
ELK MANAGEMENT PLAN – PRESENTATION TO NRB – From the desk of Josh Spiegel Wild life and Elk Biologist (DNR) – On August 14th at the St. Croix Casino in Turtle Lake the DNR (Department of Natural Resources) will present their 10 year elk management plan to the NRB (Natural Resources Board) for approval. All are welcome to attend the meeting with there also being options for virtual viewing on YouTube. If you would like to attend and give in person testimony for the plan you will need to submit a Request to Testify by Wednesday August 7th at 11:00 am. If unable to attend you can also submit written comments at Public Comments Guidelines / Wisconsin Natural Resources Board / Wisconsin DNR. Changes that are being proposed are: “Adaptive Management for the Population” – appropriate to density – up to 1 elk per square mile. “Implementation of 14 Elk Hunting Units” to disperse hunting pressure evenly and to target areas of conflict or concern if needed. “Expansion of Elk Management Zones and Renaming” – Clam Lake Elk Range to Northern Elk Management Zone and the Black River Falls Elk Range to the Central Elk Management Zone. Expansion of Northern Zone by 7 miles to address agricultural damage issues and expansion of Central Zone by 115 miles to include areas that elk currently occupy as well as more Ho-Chunk Nation lands. “Removing the Split Season for the Hunting Season” changing it to mid October thru early December with no break in between. “Creation of an Administrative Rule” for individuals that feed small mammals and birds needing to adjust the height or design of the feeder if elk visit the site. It is illegal to intentionally bait/feed elk for hunting or recreation. The draft plan will have lots of information, history and goals related to the elk management in Wisconsin over the course of the next 10 years with the above information available at Wisconsin Natural Resources Board Agenda and Green Sheet Information. .
