Clam Lake News & Events

Hello Clam Lake!

We wish a Happy Valentine’s Day to one and all! We hope you enjoy the day with that special someone and may St. Valentine grant you many chocolates.

On we proceed with our never ending spring, which started before Christmas. Now, with the road bans on, it is getting down to some serious spring like weather. No shoveling, no snow plowing…..just rain with an occasional flake thrown in for good measure. What little bits of snow we have are fast disappearing with side roads turning muddy. I’ve heard reports of maple tapping going on a month ahead of schedule. And so it is supposed to continue. Last year felt like two winters in one with its severity so, I guess we are due. (As a side note – we did awake to a light dusting of snow on Friday with possibly enough to flex those shoveling muscles.)

CEMETERY UPDATE – As many of you may have noticed our Clam Lake Cemetery is going through some changes. With that thought in mind, some of us attended the Town of Gordon town meeting to hear the news. Due to difficulty when digging due to roots here, there and everywhere brushing has been done as well as some tree removal. This will also allow for the sale of more plots of which there is need. As this is a work in progress, it does look a bit different but, according to town officials will look very nice when completed with some fencing and a bench for reflecting by the river. We congratulate them on attempting to sort out our cemetery which, as with many old cemeteries, has some mysteries. They have agreed to keep us in the loop and we thank them for that!

MEAT RAFFLE – The Clam Lake Forest Riders will be hosting a meat raffle on Saturday February 17th running from 3:00 to 5:00 at Ransoms Place. This is the same day that the Glidden Sno Bears will be holding their toilet seat races in Glidden so, hopefully, people can make a round robin of it and come out and support our hard working snomobile club as well. Although there hasn’t been a snowmobile season this year these clubs use this time to do much needed maintenance on groomers and trails which will benefit all in winters to come. Their meat raffles always provide delicious meats and a fun time! Remember all meats come from Rondeaus in Cable.

COMMUNITY CENTER MEETING – On Thursday, February 15th, the Clam Lake Community Club will be holding their first meeting in our new Community Center. The meeting will be at five followed by a Pot Luck and then it’s “Shake, Rattle and Roll” time as Master Bingo Caller Ace Griffaw leads us in the games. FYI – Ace has recently obtained his recertification in Bingo calling from Cayuga Tech so is all ready to roll. Literally. We hope to see you there!!!!

SPRING TIME BEARS – Remember when we get these unseasonably warm days that bears may awake and be roaming around. Some have reported seeing or hearing such events. Time to watch those bird feeders for marauders.

EAGLE UPDATE – Rick Hinchcliff has reported that, although he isn’t seeing any sitting being done by our resident Camp Fire Island eagles, they have been very actively remodeling their nest – which seems to be an endless work in progress. He has seen them bringing in sticks and other materials to add to make their home a comfortable space for the family they hope to have.

Until next week…..
