Clam Lake News & Events

Hello Clam Lake!

I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and will have a wonderful 2025! Best wishes to all!

I suppose, some of you have wondered where the Clam Lake news has been this past month. First a little history of the Clam Lake news….

Back in the early 1900’s when the Glidden Enterprise began, the Hart family (owners) and the Scotfords (our founders) were the best of friends. Often there was mention of Clam Lake and Camp Fire Island in the Glidden Enterprise. The Hart brothers would travel out to Clam Lake to stay on the island to hunt and fish. The Scotfords also spent some of their year in Glidden where Hazel Scotford’s family, the Taylors, resided. This developed into a deep connection to our village which still holds today with their family owning property on Buffalo Lake and Patti (Hart) Renzelmann a long time resident.

We jump to the 1960’s where the Clam Lake news, as we know it, begins to appear as a column in the Glidden Enterprise. The person hired to do it was known as the “Clam Lake Correspondent”. The first one to hold this title was Virginia Stuebe whom would write about the activities of the Community Club and the “Tuesday Club” (later known as the Women’s Club) along with often whimsical recounting of forest life. After her came Pearl Accola, whom wrote mainly of the comings and goings of the residents and summer people with additional homage paid to her beloved “chippies”. When Pearl’s tenure was over Bill MacLeod, a banker from upstate New York, took over the task. He brought a lot of wit and humor to the news. Bill would later become the President of the Drummond bank and be very active in community affairs over the years. Following him there was Pat Reinders whom wrote many interesting columns. Andrea Krygoski was the next in line. Andrea had a special empathy for anyone suffering from an illness or a loss making that a highlight of her columns. When Andrea passed, the mantel fell to me. Now, after 258 columns over a five year span, I have decided to retire from being the Clam Lake Correspondent for the Glidden Enterprise. I have enjoyed my time doing it and will always look back in fondness to time spent in the old print shop with Barb (Hart) Kempf, Pat Bonney and Laurie Hart. We had some good times! In lieu of a weekly column, I will cut back to a once a month feature on the Clam Lake website. You can access that at www.clamlakewi.com In that, I will list meetings, events and any other thing pertaining to our village that I feel needs to be put out there. If anyone has things that they would like put in the Clam Lake News they can send it to me at lmrice@cheqnet.net

So, onward and upward.

Here are the happenings for January 2025!

BOOK CLUB – The Clam Lake Book Club will be meeting on Tuesday January 14th at Lisa’s cabin. The book being discussed will be the “Book of Lost Friends” by Lisa Wingate This story follows three women as they navigate post Civil War South striving to find family and connection. The book also parallels a teacher in 1987 whom is trying to incentivize her disinterested students by learning about their past. If interested in attending please contact Lisa at lisaspeifer@gmail.com for directions.

COMMUNITY CLUB – The Clam Lake Community Club will be holding their monthly meeting on Thursday January 16th beginning at 5:00. Following the meeting there will be a Pot Luck along with some Clam Lake Style Bingo (Small Bucks Bingo) led by Master Bingo caller Ace Griffaw. Time to come out and spend some time with friends and neighbors and learn what is going on in the village. Hope to see you there!

ON THAT NOTE – The Clam Lake Community Club’s Annual Letter will be going out soon. If you are not a member, now would be a good time to become one. Cost for membership is $10 for a single and $25 for a family membership. The Community Club has been Clam Lake’s only civic organization since 1937 and has played and continues to play an important part in shaping the village and surrounding area. We thank you for your support!!!

MEAT RAFFLE – The Clam Lake Forest Riders will be holding a meat raffle at Ransoms Place on Saturday January 18th running from 3:00 to 5:00. Time to come out and support this hard working club and win some delicious meat in the process. Remember all meats come from Rondeaus in Cable.

I SPY – When Andrew Reinders (local photographer) was out and about looking for elk he says that he felt eyes upon him and turned to find a bull elk quietly standing in the woods behind him. Those of us whom live in the forest, have often found ourselves on the receiving end of the “being watched”. One can imagine the creatures we share our home with may be just as curious about us as we are about them. This appeared to be the case in this particular situation. We thank Andrew for catching this special moment.

Until next month….
