Clam Lake News & Events

Hello Clam Lake!

CONDOLENCES – We wish to extend our sympathies to the Ransom family on the loss of Nancy Ransom. Nancy has been an integral part of our community since her and her son Zac took over the former “Y-Go-By” several years ago. She was always ready with a smile when you saw her and was devoted to her family. She will be missed. Nancy was 67.

BOOK CLUB REMINDER – The next meeting of the Clam Lake Book Club will be held on Monday August 12th at the Elkhorn Lodge. Meetings run from 4:30 to 5:30. The book being discussed will be “Remarkably Bright Creatures” by Shelby Van Pelt and was featured on the Today Show as a “Read with Jenna” book. We hope you will join us for some “lively discussion, camaraderie, tasty food and inspiring libation”. Food and drink are available for purchase before, during and after the meetings.

ST. GEORGE – Mass is celebrated every Saturday at 6:00 pm during the summer season at our historic St. George Chapel. Come take a walk back in time to a simpler era in our log cabin chapel made from the forest that surrounds it. Come pray with us!

PARTY REMINDER – On Saturday, July 27th Ransoms Place will be holding their yearly anniversary party beginning around 1 pm. The party will feature live music from 6 to 9 with Jake Rock, a Bean Bag Tournament with check in at one and the ever popular all you can eat Flip Flop Chicken and sweet corn. Time to come out and enjoy good times with friends and neighbors as we congratulate Zac on another year of business in our village.

COMMUNITY CLUB MEETING RECAP – The Clam Lake Community Club held their monthly meeting on Thursday July 18th. The main part of the discussion was on our recent 4th of July celebration and the success of that. A thank you was extended to all that helped with this event and especially to Ace Griffaw who seemed to be here, there and everywhere making sure all was going according to plan. Thank you Ace! Kathy Arias gave the Bingo report noting that Michael Fabrizi of White Bass Lake was the big winner of the evening by winning three times! Joan Griffaw came in second place with her two game streak and Bob and Cindy Buryanek proved that after several years of marriage people do really begin to act alike by both winning the same game at the same time. Marty Stein won the Fill Your Card prize along with Pam Crawford taking home the door prize. Congrats to all our winners!

WHITE TAIL TWINS – Last week I wrote about the inability of elk to successfully birth twins. This week I give the white tail deer a shout out on the same topic. Deer, elk, moose and caribou are all members of the family of animals known as cervids with each species having its own unique qualities. Unlike elk, moose and caribou where instances of twining are rare, deer have twins routinely. “White tailed deer typically give birth to twins, but the number of fawns can vary depending on factors such as age, health and the size and condition of the doe. A study of 1,924 adult does from 2003-13 found that litter size ranged from one to four fawns per pregnant adult female, with the average of 1.9. In subsequent years she will likely give birth to 2 fawns, and in rare occasions up to 3 or 4.” Seems deer have taken on the responsibility of species mass production in the cervid group. Good job deer!

Until next week…..
