Hello Clam Lake!
As to weather this week? A mixed bag was to be had. Most of the week was wet and gloomy but, thankfully, by the weekend – just in time for the opening of fishing season the skies cleared and the thermometers rose. Saturday was a gorgeous day! The fishermen couldn’t have asked for a better opener. Of course, “reality” settled back in on Sunday with the return of rain and cooler temps. Saturday was just a little promise of things to come.
NOTICE: The West Fork Waterway Association will be holding their Board of Directors meeting at the Clam Lake Community Club on Saturday, May 15th at 9:00 am. The West Fork Waterway is on the West Fork of the Chippewa River and includes the area from the Day Lake Dam to the Highway 77 Dam. The WFWA, a 501.c organization, assists the Township of Gordon with funding expenses related to the maintenance of the Highway 77 Dam. Members and the public are welcome to attend. If you attend, please continue to follow recommendations for social distancing and masking based on current county regulations. Thank you for that! PLAY BALL!: Word on “the street” (after all, Clam Lake only has one!) is that Lyn Hartl, owner of the Junction, will be bringing Pickleball back to Clam sometime over the summer. This was always a great time for locals to mingle and get some healthy outdoor exercise at the same time. Everyone took their turns at being players, cheerleaders and ball gatherers with plenty of smiles all round. We wish to thank him in advance for attempting to bring this fun activity back to our village. So, start practicing your swing and as they say, “stay tuned”….. Go Team Clam Lake!!!!
ELK COME TO CALL – SECRET SHOPPERS: A week or so ago a group of elk made their way into town to do their periodic check on the village, it’s inhabitants and the businesses. Upon viewing the Junction they then made an impromptu stop at the Elkhorn. Satisfied that all was up to snuff and well they made their way down Higway M to forage a bit. Thanks to them for keeping an eye on us!
SPEAKING OF….A brainstormer was held at the Community Club on Tuesday, April 27th to discuss a possible Elk Festival to be held sometime in the Fall. In attendance were local businessmen, Josh Spiegel our Wildlife/Elk Biologist and Regional Tourism Specialist Julie Fox. Lots of great ideas were bandied about with plenty of enthusiasm all round. Julie pointed out that as the Elk Capital of Wisconsin Clam Lake has something unique to offer. And we do!!!
HISTORY MOMENT: From a May 2nd 1947 edition of the Glidden Enterprise: “Celebrate Anniversaries – Clam Lake people joined to honor four of their couples last Saturday when wedding anniversaries occurring in April were observed by Mr. and Mrs. H.A. Scotford, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Stuebe, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Stuebe and Mr. and Mrs. C.Wahlendfeldt. Mr. and Mrs. H.A.Scotford, pioneers of Clam Lake, celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary (married in 1912) and the other couples were their guests at a six o’clock dinner at the Community Clubhouse. Following the dinner a large number of friends of the celebrants gathered at the Clubhouse to spend the evening dancing and offering their congratulations and best wishes to the happy couples.”
