REVISITING THE PAST – This past week District Ranger Mike Martin came out to meet with Ray Mathey, son of Alex Mathey, at the former Forest Service Guard Station in Clam Lake. Ray shared his memories of the time when the Guard Station was actively manned. Alex worked for the Forest Service for many years, often working out of the Station. Ray remembered that the school bus would drop him off there if his father was working and has many memories of being in the building and the work his father and others did. Alex also manned the Fire Tower in Clam Lake, with Ray often accompanying him. His Dad would always let him go first so he could catch him if he happened to stumble as they climbed up the long ladder to the top. If a fire was detected it would be called into the Station and from there, using a large map that is still housed inside, they could pinpoint where the fire was occurring. The Station is still used by the FS for storage and an antenna for communication. When we were inside, it happened that the transmitter was receiving some messages so we were able to see how that works in this modern era. One of the out buildings is refrigerated and is used for cold storage for incoming seedlings to keep them fresh for planting. Was great to revisit this very important part of our past and present.

Until next week…..
