Hello Clam Lake!
As the week went along we were treated to some glorious weather with a “just about pefect” weekend for everyone out and about enjoying the holiday. For our little village the 4th of July is the crescendo of the summer tourist season and we welcome all those that make their way up north to spend some time with us. Enjoy!
St. GEORGE CHAPEL: Mass is celebrated every Saturday at 6:00 pm at our historic “Chapel in the Pines”. Take a step back in time to a simpler era in our log cabin chapel built from the forest that surrounds it. St. George is a mission chapel that caters to the spiritual needs of locals, summer people and tourists alike during the summer season. All are welcome! Being the land of vacationeers, St. George’s slogan has always been – “No Vacation from God’s Service!”Come pray with us!
COMMUNITY CENTER UPDATE: The new Clam Lake Community Center is coming together – literally. Walls and trusses have been put up with plans moving forward. The building committee has met and decided on various things such as roofing, siding color, trim, etc. We thank them for all their input and care. Great to see the community working on a project together! As always, we are “the little village that could”.
4TH OF JULY RECAP: Wow! Is all one can say about Clam Lake’s annual 4th of July celebration. Thankfully we were blessed with just about perfect weather for the evening as our fireworks display played to a packed “house” both on land and “at sea”. Was great to see everyone out and about enjoying the holiday. Special thanks go out to all those that helped make the celebration a success. First of all we thank the men that work behind the scenes ordering, setting up and firing the magnificent display. They were: Bud Rubeck, Derek Bay, Tom Biasi, Joel Eder, Josh Louks, Jared Eder and Hayden Louks. They did a fantastic job! We wish to thank those that worked in the concession stand, helped set up and made and served food. They are: Lea and Jerry Justice (barbecues, stand), Alice, Rick and Kim Filter (hot dogs and glow sticks), the Griffaw family -Ace, Joan, Kim and Kelly (popcorn and glow sticks), Georgianna Fanella (doughnuts and glow sticks), Dennis and Bonnie Booth (stand), Ariel Schonscheck and Kathy (McCorison) Arias (hot dog buns and bracelets) and Kathy Fanella, Traci Sikorski and Patty Rizzi (set up). Team work….it’s what it’s all about and Clam knows how to do it! Finally, a big thank you to all those that attended and made the event the success it was. What a great night!!!! (As a side note – After Show – after everyone had left it was discovered that one box of fireworks that hadn’t gone off initially were ready to be fired and so they were – much to the delight of the work crew cleaning up and anyone that happened to catch a glimpse.)
HISTORY MOMENT: Taken from a July 1951 edition of the Glidden Enterprise. “Clam Lake on Airport List – The Wisconsin Aeronautic commission made known its long range plans this week, and listed among the places which are designated for airports in this section is Clam Lake, Mellen and Hurley. These places are classified for airstrips of the 1300 to 2300 foot lengths. A seaplane base is also listed for the city of Ashland. Plans for airports and bases are completed contingent upon a portion of the cost being met by the local communities. The plan released this week is known as the three-year plan and contemplates expenditure of over $10,000 in the state within the that period.” Although this never came to pass I don’t think it was for lack of trying.
